Alex is always available to assist constituents who wish to contact our office and is available for meeting by appointment. Alex also holds action posts and public meetings throughout the electorate. Some of the issues Alex can assist you with are detailed in our online office.

Alex has worked in the Gaven electorate for over 20 years. Alex was first elected as a Member of Parliament in a by-election in 2006, defeated by a slim margin in the General 2006 Election and then re-elected in 2009. As a family GP, he has worked across a variety of local groups and has enormous experience in Queensland’s medical system.

Alex has a long history of trying to improve the medical system in QLD including compelling the QLD State Government to commit $1.3 Billion for the construction of a new hospital in Southport. Alex has been a member of the Save the Gold Coast Hospital Action Group calling for the retention in part of the site, beds and services once the new Griffith University Hospital opens in 2012. Alex has served on the local and state QLD Division’s of General Practice. With a firm commitment to helping people from all walks of life, Alex was the visiting doctor for the local Numinbah Correctional Facility for many years.

Tabling a petition to improve our Gold Coast bus services and timetabling, Alex has worked with Gold Coast Bus drivers, commuters and the TWU working towards a complete overhaul of the system. Alex has also called for a duplication of the Gold Coast rail line over the Coomera flood plain to ensure efficient six-set carriages run through peak period.
Alex has also worked with local police on law and order issues as well as community groups such as Save Parklands Showgrounds Action Group to ensure Parklands is not sold by the government without a viable alternative for over 300 community groups which use the grounds.

Alex has a real commitment to improving facilities for youth on the Gold Coast and he has been formally involved in drug and alcohol education programs in local schools. He believes that a strong focus needs to be given to providing affordable housing and accommodation for families and students within the Gaven electorate. Alex recognises the downturn on the Gold Coast, coupled with the increase in living costs, fuel, electricity and water has hurt small businesses, families and hard-working locals.

With his wife Susie, Alex has four children and has been involved in his children’s schooling, their support organizations and assisting them through their university studies. Alex enjoys golf, skiing, swimming, surfing, gardening, and medical teaching.

The Gaven Electorate comprises in part or all of the following suburbs; Ashmore, Carrara, Clagiraba, Gaven, Gilston, Guanaba, Highland Park, Maudsland, Molendinar, Mount Nathan, Nerang, Pacific Pines, Wongawallan, and Worongary.
